THREE GENERATIONS IN STONE: THE LUCK STORY (1923-2007)

In 1923, Charles S. Luck Jr. opened a single quarry just west of Richmond, Va., called the Sunnyside Granite Company.  More than eight decades later, under the leadership of three generations of the Luck family, Luck Stone is now one of the largest private, family owned and operated aggregates suppliers in the United States with more than 1,000 associates.

In the company’s early days, Mr. Luck Jr. added manufacturing facilities to keep up with the demand for crushed stone.  He pioneered the use of electricity, converting from standard steam-powered machines to more productive electric ones.  In 1955, his son, Charles S. Luck III, joined the company and 10 years later assumed the role of president.  As forward thinking as his father before him, he led the company to become a nationally recognized industry leader in automation, product diversification, plant safety and environmental stewardship.

In 1976, Mr. Luck III captured the industry's attention by adding a “supermarket for stone.” Luck Stone’s Architectural Stone Division – now Charles Luck Stone Center – is evolving the industry with new levels of customer service, product selection and an environment designed to inspire people to think of stone in new and creative ways.

Today led by Charles S. Luck IV, who became company president and chief operating officer in 1995, Luck Stone is one of the largest producers of crushed stone in the nation. It operates 17 crushed stone plants in Virginia and North Carolina and two sand and gravel operations. Luck Stone also owns Lee Tennis/HAR-TRU®, the world's most popular type of clay tennis court and a leading supplier of court accessories. Luck Properties is the real estate development arm of Luck Stone and includes a portfolio of three major business parks in Virginia.
